As cities grow, jobs demand more, traffic congests and free time
becomes more precious (all assumptions I know), adults will
increasingly look for alternatives to campus-based education.
This factors, coupled with an increasing familiarity and comfort
with technology involved in distance learning, will lead more and
more adults to look for learning environments that allow
flexibility and increased choice.

required to do a complete competent job

Adult learning to be done online is supplementary to adult
learning in classrooms in the next century.

The next century?! Given the speed at which education is
changing at present, it is hard to say, but my guess would be
that learning (as opposed to mere knoledge-retrieval) will be
accomplished through wearable convergent devices that provide
networked spaces for interative study. Education itself will
change, as well. I see the traditional-aged student primarily
remaining in a residence-based, technology-enhanced system and
making a transition to a generally 'class-free' learning
environment. That is, adults will be able to choose from a wide
variety of learning opportunities that will be tailored to needs
(learning style, time constraints, topic depth requirements,
etc.) and abilities (skill and cognitive levels, etc.). The
trend will favor those that are the most self-reliant learners,
high-performance learning will occur in networked groups
(cohorts) and gradually all adult learners will need to become
critical readers, communicators and extractors of information.
